SF VIETNAMESE SANDWICHES

There is something magical about discovering a place that serves a food that you love, at a price that you feel good about, in a location within minutes of you.

I love me a bánh mì.

I’d been on the lookout for a good bánh mì spot near me for a while, but they all seemed to be inconveniently located or overpriced. Then one fine day, as some friends and I were sitting down to start a session of D&D, one of the members of my party showed up to the game with a shiny plastic bag filled to the brim with my favorite kind of sandwich. He purchased them from a spot right down the road, he said. Impossible.

How did I miss this? Right under my nose this whole time? Tucked inside of a supermarket filled with fresh produce, kitchen gadgets, and conveniently, a selection of unique and tasty snacks and drinks that pair deliciously with a good sandwich.

During my last visit, after ordering my go-to #307 Grilled Chicken, I decided to grab a chip to go with it. Something I’d never tried before: Karamucho, a seasoned potato snack. I’ve always loved taking a gamble on a new snack that I haven’t tried yet; a small way to keep life fun and interesting. The risk of stepping outside of your comfort zone means that sometimes you end up paying for a chewy candy that tastes like feet, but taking that risk also creates the possibility of finding something new to love.

It was my lucky day. Karamucho did not taste like feet. It tasted like spicy, savory goodness. Most definitely a new favorite.

No matter the mood I’m in, sitting down with a fresh bánh mì, a salty snack, and a crispy-cold soda pop always seems to fill me belly and mind with a comfortable feeling of contentment. When I find something that brings me happiness, I can’t help but share. So here I am, telling you.

Maybe one of these days when I’m there picking up my favorite meal, you’ll walk in and our eyes will meet. I’ll give you a little knowing nod from across the aisle. When they call your name you’ll turn and see your food is ready, and when you look back I’m already gone. We never speak, but even so we both know what has happened here.

A bánh mìracle.
